Examination Preparations

Abdominal Ultrasound:

 

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.  Small quantities of water is allowed.

Pelvic Ultrasound (Male & Female); Obstetrical Ultrasound (16 weeks or under ): 

 

Finish drinking 5 glasses of 8oz water one hour before the start of your examination. 

Do not void or use the washroom.  A full bladder is necessary for the examination. If it is difficult to hold the water, you may let a little bit out, but try to maintain most of the water inside. 

If it is difficult to finish 5 glasses of water, you may aim to drink 3 – 4 glasses of 8oz water, provided that it is still finished 1 hour prior to the start of your examination.

Abdominal and Pelvic Ultrasound Together:

 

When having these two tests done at the same time, you must follow the instructions below:

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Do not void or use the washroom.  A full bladder is necessary for the examination. 

Scrotal/ Thyroid/ Breast Ultrasound:

No preparation is required

 

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound:

No preparation is required. 

 

*If you are coming for a shoulder ultrasound, you may want to bring or wear a thinned strap tank top.  For a knee or hamstring ultrasound, you may want to bring or wear shorts.

 

Vascular

No preparation is required.

 

X-ray

 

No preparation is required.

 

Prostate Biopsy

 

Follow the instructions given to you by your urologist.
