What is general ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create pictures of organs and soft tissues inside the body. It does not use X-rays.
Why might your doctor order it?
Your doctor may request ultrasound to investigate symptoms such as pain or swelling, look more closely at an organ or a lump, or assess a pregnancy. The examination depends on the question your doctor wants to answer.

General ultrasound examinations
Each examination has its own purpose and preparation. Your referral identifies the study; our team can help confirm which instructions apply.
Abdominal ultrasound
Imaging of abdominal organs, such as the liver, gallbladder and kidneys.
Pelvic ultrasound
Pelvic and gynaecological examinations for the study requested by your referring clinician.
Pregnancy (obstetrical) ultrasound
Pregnancy ultrasound as requested on your referral.

What happens during your visit?
01 · Get ready
Settle in.
You will be positioned for the area being examined. Clothing may need to be moved aside, or you may change into a gown.
02 · The examination
Gel, a probe and images.
The technologist places gel on the skin and moves a small probe over the area to capture images. You may feel some pressure.
03 · Your results
Follow up with your doctor.
A radiologist interprets the images. The report goes to your referring clinician, who can discuss the findings with you.
Some pelvic or prostate studies use an internal probe. Ask our team what your referred examination involves so you know what to expect.
Ask questions and let your technologist know if you feel uncomfortable.
General ultrasound preparation
Abdominal ultrasound
Do not eat or drink after midnight. Small amounts of water are allowed. Follow the instructions confirmed for your appointment.
Pelvic or obstetrical ultrasound at 16 weeks or under
Finish five 8-ounce glasses of water one hour before the examination and keep your bladder full. If five glasses are difficult, the clinic’s guide allows three to four glasses, finished one hour beforehand. If holding your bladder is difficult, release only a little and retain as much as possible.
Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound together
Do not eat or drink after midnight. Finish five 8-ounce glasses of water only, one hour before the examination. Do not empty your bladder.
Breast, thyroid or scrotal ultrasound
No special preparation is required for these examinations.

Before you arrive
Bring your signed referral and health card. Wear comfortable clothing. Arrive 10–15 minutes before your appointment to register.
Each appointment has time reserved for your examination. If you arrive late and there is not enough time to complete it, you may need to be rebooked.

Do I need an appointment?
Yes. Ultrasound is by appointment. Have your signed referral ready when contacting our team.
How much time should I allow?
The time needed varies with the examination and the number of studies requested. Our booking team can tell you how much time to allow.
Is general ultrasound only for pregnancy?
No. General ultrasound includes abdominal, pelvic, breast, thyroid, scrotal and other examinations, as well as pregnancy imaging.
Do I need a referral for ultrasound?
Bring a requisition signed by your referring clinician. It identifies which examination is needed and helps our team confirm preparation.
Can I have abdominal and pelvic ultrasound at the same visit?
If both are requested, tell our booking team so they can arrange your visit and confirm the combined preparation instructions.

If you need to change or cancel, please give us 48 hours' notice where possible, and at least 24 hours.
